    THE POOL AND THE PEDESTAL opens in the capital city of Zodra. Kael has finally reached the military institution known as The Hold and reunited with his father, Brelg. The boy longs for some semblance of normalcy to return to his life.

     However, the world has changed so dramatically in the past few weeks that there is no going back to the simple life of a Southland merchant. Brelg has resumed a position as a training sergeant in the heavily fortified barracks and vows to transform the Southern militias into a fierce fighting force.

     Manfir resumes the responsibilities he abdicated years ago. King Macin releases command of the Zodrian forces and places it squarely on the prince's shoulders.

     Others in the group, including Flair, begin to distinguish themselves in the military build up. Only Kael finds himself directionless and in confusion as to what the future holds.

     But others have a plan for the boy, and the future they foresee for Kael is a short one. Izgra's servants have infiltrated the highest seats of power and even the mighty Hold cannot keep the forces of Chaos at bay.

     As the boy sinks deeper into despair over the loss of both his brother Aemmon and the happy life he once led, he becomes distracted from the threats hovering over him like a bird of prey.
